Why should I donate?
As a volunteer-based organization, OSCELOT stands most in need of dedicated volunteers who can work on software, documentation, or administrative issues within each of OSCELOT projects. OSCELOT provides the infrastructure for the projects - the mailing lists, code repositories, bug tracking systems, etc. While all of the administrative effort is currently through unpaid volunteers, financial assistance enables us to purchase services and software which provide the OSCELOT infrastructure, and allows us to contract third party support and services.
Is there a cost to participate?
Of course not! OSCELOT is about you, promoting the use of free and open source educational software, and is committed to providing free access to all interested participants. All of our code is distributed under OSI-approved licenses. The project mailing lists are all open to the public and project contributors and suggestions are welcomed with open arms (for more details see the Projects page).
So, there is no cost required to download or contribute code to the projects. However, there is usually a substantial time commitment that is required in order to contribute to a project. For some, time is cheaper than money. For others, money is cheaper than time. We realize that, and want to promote contributions from everyone - no matter the form.
Become involved in your favorite project!
The first way you can help OSCELOT is to contribute your time to your favorite project. There is always a need for participants in each project. We also consider reporting of problems to our tracking systems a valuable contribution. Each project will have more information about how to best contribute on their own websites.
Create a new project
OSCELOT is always looking for new or existing collaborative software projects that are in need of a new or additional home. This includes projects related or unrelated to the existing OSCELOT projects, as long as they concern the teaching and learning communities. If you have further questions about how to become involved in an extant project or how to start a new project, please contact email@example.com.
If I donate financially, where would my donations go?
Non-directed vs directed financial contributions
If you'd like to contribute financially to OSCELOT, we would greatly appreciate it. Currently, the bulk of our financial obligations are going towards providing our technical infrastructure and associated services - the software and hardware that we require. OSCELOT also requires legal support for the organization, our projects, and therefore, it is often required to obtain qualified legal counsel about issues that arise.
- Non-directed financial contributions are used at the discretion of OSCELOT for funding and delivering the various services provided by the organization and those who serve the organization.
- Directed financial contributions are used in a targeted manner for accomplishing specific goals of the organization.
Please note that we currently do not support directed financial contributions of any nature or amount.
